What you don't understand is that the maxim is this: Respect other cultures.
As far as the Confederacy, I believe the reason to oppose them was as much to do with wanting a unified America as any ideological reasons. Allow every splinter to shard away and soon there will be no tree left. Obviously one large country is stronger than two half-sized countries.
And no, it really isn't any of our business what other cultures do in their own land. It's not our business if newly instated male lion Pride Leaders kill the cubs either. Maybe those poor little lion kittens don't want to be killed, and maybe it would be more beneficial to Lion Society if the males that take over a Pride left at least the female cubs alive for them to mate with later, and maybe it would reduce inbreeding and build stronger Prides. But, in the end, it's not up to us to interfere.
And the reason is this: If another culture falls by its own machinations, that is evolution. But if we are wrong, and we cause them to fall by our interference, that is anti-Darwinistic, and what's more, it's wrong. You know that more often than not, interference at least fails to build a better system, and at worst causes the demise of a working one.
